"I Heard It Through the Grapevine" has been used twice in television commercials – each time using session musicians recreating the style of the Marvin Gaye version. For the 1985 Levi's 501 commercial "Launderette", featuring male model Nick Kamen, agency BBH and director Roger Lyons, owing to budgetary constraints, brought in Karl Jenkins and Mike Ratledge to recreate the sound of the Marvin Gaye original with Tony Jackson, a Barbadian background singer for Paul Young, handling vocals and P. P. Arnold on backing vocals.[21][32][33][34][35] The commercial's success prompted Tamla-Motown to re-release Gaye's single with the Levi's 501 logo on the sleeve — "an example of integrated marketing almost before the term was invented".[36][37] The record went to number eight on the UK Singles chart, marking its second chart performance.[21] A year later, in 1986, Buddy Miles was the singer for the clay animation group The California Raisins which sang it as part a TV advertising campaign.[38] Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine. + Follow Artist. Ancora nel 1963 Hitch Hike e Can I Get a Witness il successo stentava a manifestarsi. Il suo lavoro con il produttore Norman Whitfield, che produsse Grapevine, portò a successi analoghi per i singoli Too Busy Thinking About My Baby e That's the Way Love Is. Released in 1976, I Want You had an R&B number one in its title track (15 pop), followed by "After the Dance" (14 R&B). That same year, Gaye's contentious divorce from Anna Gordy was finalized. As part of the settlement, Gaye agreed to record a new album whose royalties would cover missed alimony payments. As he worked on the record, Motown released Live at the London Palladium, which featured the single "Got to Give It Up, Pt. 1." A massive smash, reaching number one on both pop and R&B charts, "Got to Give It Up" was Gaye's biggest hit of the disco era.

I Heard It Through the Grapevine". Outros destaques do LP foram as canções "Come Get to This", "You Sure Love to Ball" e "Distant Lover".[13]

In 1998, co-writer James Nyx Jr. recalled, "Marvin had a good tune, sort of blues-like, but didn't have any words for it. We started putting some stuff in there about how rough things were around town. We laughed about putting lyrics in about high taxes, 'cause both of us owed a lot. And we talked about how the government would send guys to the moon, but not help folks in the ghetto. But we still didn't have a name, or really a good idea of the song. Then, I was home reading the paper one morning, and saw a headline that said something about the 'inner city' of Detroit. And I said, 'Damn, that's it. 'Inner City Blues.' "[1] During this flush of success, Terrell suffered from migraine headaches, culminating in an on-stage collapse at an October 14, 1967 concert with Gaye. The two managed to finish some recording sessions -- "You're All I Need to Get By" dates from these -- before her death in 1970. Gaye took Terrell's death hard, but he initially worked through the grief, scoring some of his greatest hits along the way. Released at the end of 1968, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" spent seven weeks at the top of the pop charts in early 1969, matching that streak on the R&B charts. It was one of his biggest hits, followed by two subsequent smashes: "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby" and "That's the Way Love Is," both arriving in 1969.

Here, My Dear, Gaye's promised album to his ex-wife Anna, appeared in December 1978. The album not only contained no hits, it seemed designed to do. "A Funky Space Reincarnation (Part 1)" went to 23 on the R&B charts, but didn't make the Hot 100. Gaye began work on an album called Lover Man, but once its lead single, "Ego Tripping Out," failed to chart, he scrapped the album and relocated to Maui. His stay in Hawaii wasn't long. If the physical cause of Marvin Gaye’s death was straightforward—”Gunshot wound to chest perforating heart, lung and liver,” according to the Los Angeles County Coroner—the events that led to it were much more tangled. On the one hand, there was the longstanding conflict with his father dating back to childhood. Marvin Gay, Sr., (the “e” was added by his son for his stage name) was a preacher in the Hebrew Pentecostal Church and a proponent of a strict moral code he enforced brutally with his four children. He was also, by all accounts, a hard-drinking cross-dresser who personally embodied a rather complicated model of morality. By some reports, Marvin Sr. harbored significant envy over his son’s tremendous success, and Marvin Jr. clearly harbored unresolved feelings toward his abusive father. Singer Tammi Terrell joined forces with the immortal Marvin Gaye to create some of the greatest love songs ever to emerge from the Motown hit factory; sadly, their series of classic duets -- Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing, and You're All I Need to Get By among them -- came to an abrupt and tragic halt with her premature death Marvin Gaye nasceu no Freedman's Hospital, em Washington, D.C..

Whitfield wanted Gordy to release Gaye's "Grapevine" as a single, but Gordy did not want to release another version after the Pips had already made a hit out of it.[15] In September 1968, Whitfield added "Grapevine" to Gaye's new album In the Groove.[15] On release "Grapevine" became a radio hit and, according to Gordy himself, "The DJs played it so much off the album that we had to release it as a single".[17] So Gaye's version was released as a single on October 30, 1968. Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" eventually outsold the Pips', and until The Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" 20 months later, was the biggest hit single of all time on the Motown label. It stayed at the top of the Billboard Pop Singles chart[18] for seven weeks, from December 14, 1968, to January 25, 1969. Gaye's "Grapevine" also held number one on the R&B chart during the same seven weeks,[19] and stayed at number one in the United Kingdom for three weeks starting on March 26, 1969. The label was pleased with the success, although Gaye, depressed because of issues such as the illness of singing partner Tammi Terrell (which would kill her less than a year later), was quoted as saying that his success "didn't seem real" and that he "didn't deserve it".[15]

This book charts his turbulent career, focusing on his stormy relationship with his recording company Tamla Motown and its mercurial head Berry Gordy, whose sister he married By 1966, Barrett Strong, the singer on Motown Records' breakthrough hit, "Money (That's What I Want)", had the basics of a song he had started to write in Chicago, where the idea had come to him while walking down Michigan Avenue that people were always saying "I heard it through the grapevine".[3] The phrase is associated with black slaves during the Civil War, who had their form of telegraph: the human grapevine.[4][5] Producer Norman Whitfield worked with Strong on the song, adding lyrics to Strong's basic Ray Charles influenced gospel tune and the single chorus line of "I heard it through the grapevine".[6] This was to be the first of a number of successful collaborations between Strong and Whitfield.[7] Após abandonar as Forças Aéreas em 1957, Gaye começou sua carreira musical em vários grupos doo wop, fixando-se em um popular grupo de Washington DC, chamado The Marquees. The Miracles first recorded the song on August 16, 1966[1] and included their version on their 1968 album, Special Occasion. The Marvin Gaye version was placed on his 1968 album In the Groove, where it gained the attention of radio disc jockeys, and Motown founder Berry Gordy finally agreed to its release as a single in October 1968, when it went to the top of the Billboard Pop Singles chart for seven weeks from December 1968 to January 1969 and became for a time the biggest hit single on the Motown label (Tamla). Share with your friends Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded "Grapevine" on June 17, 1967, in Motown's Studio A, with Norman Whitfield as producer. After hearing Aretha Franklin's version of "Respect", Whitfield rearranged "Grapevine" to include some of the funk elements of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. According to David Ritz, Whitfield set to record a song that would "out-funk" Aretha. After Whitfield presented the demo tapes, Gladys Knight, Bubba Knight, William Guest, and Edward Patten worked for several weeks on their vocal arrangement. To make the song suitable for Gladys, the first line of the second verse ("I know a man ain't supposed to cry/But these tears I can't hold inside") was altered to ("Take a good look at these tears in my eyes/Baby, these tears I can't hold inside"). After much talk, Gordy reluctantly allowed the Pips' version to be a single on September 28, 1967, on Motown's Soul label.

Gaye turned explicitly carnal on 1973's Let's Get It On. The title track became a smash in the summer of 1973, reaching number one on Billboard's pop chart -- only his second single to reach the pole position on the Hot 100 -- and spending six weeks on the top of the R&B charts. Diana & Marvin, a duet album with Diana Ross, followed, featuring the hit "You're a Special Part of Me," but Let's Get It On kept spinning out hits, with "Come Get to This" reaching three on the R&B charts and "You Sure Love to Ball" getting to 13 the next year. In 1974, he released Marvin Gaye Live! as he worked on his next album, I Want You. Originally published in the U.K. in 1998, this biography surveys the ups and downs of Marvin Gaye's life, taking an admiring but not enamored stance concerning the Motown singer's contribution to American music. London-based music writer Turner presents an exciting profile, regardless of the reader's prior knowledge of the soul legend Those feelings spilled out for the final time in the Los Angeles home of Marvin Gay, Sr., and his wife Alberta. Their son, the international recording star, had moved into his parents’ home in late 1983 at a low point in his struggle with depression, debt and cocaine abuse. Only one year removed from his first Grammy win and from a triumphant return to the pop charts with “Sexual Healing,” Marvin Gaye was in horrible physical, psychological and financial shape. Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. (2 April 1939 - 1 April 1984) was an American soul and rnb singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, known as The Prince of Soul, or The Prince of Motown. Originally a member of the doo-wop group The Moonglows, he pursued a solo career after the group disbanded and released many successful solo hits including I Heard It Through the Grapevine, Let's.

Marvin was a heavy marijuana user, during the beginning of his tenure as a member of Harvey and the Moonglows,[35] and he would remain a heavy user throughout his life. Marvin was first introduced to cocaine in the early 1960s.[36] At first, Marvin had issues snorting, so he would use it by either rubbing it on his gums or eating it,[36] but by the late 1970s, he had developed a serious dependence and addiction to the drug and would later begin free basing while in London. The singer was also a user of PCP.[32] Gaye was briefly sober after having moved to Belgium under the watchful eye of Freddy Cousaert, only to relapse when he returned to the United States from Belgium in October 1982. His addiction led to increasing paranoia and depression. During the promotion of his Sexual Healing Tour, he wore a bullet-proof vest and brought along bodyguards with loaded pistols because he feared for his life as he was convinced that someone was plotting to kill him. When an autopsy was produced on Marvin, they found minor traces of cocaine in his system. Judge Ronald George believed that PCP (or angel dust) was present in Marvin's system, but this was due to a misreading of the coroner's report. [37] Tammi Terrell was a stage name given to her by Motown founder Berry Gordy. She and the boxer were not related. She and the boxer were not related. Recording star at Motown Records in the 1960s (though she recorded for subsidiary label Tamla) While Gaye would later describe living with his father was "like living with a king, a very peculiar, changeable, cruel and all-powerful king", he embraced the love of his mother, explaining, "if it wasn't for Mother, who was always there to console me and praise me for my singing, I think I would have been one of those child suicide cases you read about in the papers".[8] Due to the song's success, In the Groove was re-issued as I Heard It Through the Grapevine and peaked at number two on the R&B album chart and number sixty-three on the album chart, which was at the time Marvin's highest-charted solo studio effort to date. Because of the success of both versions, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" was the first and last number one on the Billboard R&B chart in 1968: the Pips version was the first week of January, the Gaye version the last week of December. Gladys Knight was not pleased that Gaye's version usurped her own, and claimed that Gaye's version was recorded over an instrumental track Whitfield had prepared for a Pips song, an allegation Gaye denied.[20] In 1985, one year following Gaye's death, the song was re-released in the UK reaching number eight thanks to a Levi's commercial (starring Nick Kamen).[21] Gaye attempted suicide at least three times. The first occurred in 1969 when he was holed up at a Detroit apartment.[38] Gaye, despondent from his failing marriage at the time, sought to shoot himself with a handgun.[39] Berry Gordy's father, "Pops", eventually stopped this attempt. In 1979, while in Maui, Gaye ingested a full ounce of cocaine in a second suicide attempt. Gaye explained later, "I'd given up. The problems were too big for me. I just wanted to be left alone and blow my brains on high-octane toot. It would be a slow but relatively pleasant death, certainly less messy than a gun."[40] Four days before his death, according to his sister Jeanne, Marvin again attempted suicide by jumping out of a speeding sports car only to suffer minor bruises.[41] According to Frankie Gaye, after he found him dying from his gunshot wounds, Gaye explained that he had his father shoot him because he "couldn't do it himself".[42] In an interview a year before his death in 1984, he explained his bouts with depression, stating that during his exile, he was "a manic-depressive. I was at my lowest ebb. I really didn't feel like I was loved. Because I didn't feel love, I felt useless."[43]

During Gaye's early years in Motown, he was inspired by his relationship with his wife, often writing songs dedicated to her, including his 1963 top ten hit, "Pride and Joy". Of that song, Gaye later told David Ritz, "When I composed 'Pride and Joy', I was head over heels in love with Anna. I just wrote what I felt about her, and what she did for me. She was my pride and joy."[15] The marriage was reportedly volatile with accusations of infidelity and accounts of physical violence committed by the both of them.[16] American singer-songwriter and musician with a three-octave vocal range, born April 2, 1939 in Washington, D.C., USA, died April 1, 1984 in Los Angeles, California, USA when he was shot by his father Marvin Gay, Sr.. What's Going On freed other Motown artists from the label's tight creative restrictions, but Gaye himself wound up a bit adrift in 1972. He attempted to write further political material, but the resulting "You're the Man (Part 1)" stiffed on the pop charts, failing to crack the Top 40 even though it went Top Ten R&B. An attempted album anchored on "You're the Man" never materialized -- it'd be assembled as an archival release in 2019 -- but he did wind up scoring the blaxploitation film Trouble Man, scoring a Top Ten R&B and pop hit with its title track.

Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler), often shortened to Inner City Blues, is a song by Marvin Gaye, released as the third and final single from and the climactic song of his 1971 landmark album, What's Going On Em 16 de março de 1970, Tammi Terrell morreu em decorrência do tumor cerebral e deixou Marvin devastado. Marvin Gaye by David Ritz. During this transition, Gaye earned money by playing sessions as a drummer, which led to him penning original songs. Anna occasionally helped out in Marvin's compositions, including two hits for Motown group The Originals and several tracks from What's Going On. By the time the couple relocated to Los Angeles in early 1973, their marriage was in turmoil and that spring, they filed for legal separation. Devastated by his marriage's decline, Gaye re-wrote the ballad "Just to Keep You Satisfied", as a solemn love song describing the demise of a marriage. Gaye met 17-year old Janis Hunter (born January 5, 1956) in March 1973 while working on his Let's Get It On album with producer Ed Townsend. Hunter was the child of jazz musician Slim Gaillard. Townsend's former girlfriend Barbara Hunter arrived in the studio with Janis that month. Janis's presence served as inspiration for Gaye during the making of the album. After their first date, Gaye was inspired to record the composition, "If I Should Die Tonight".[23] The couple later moved in together, first to Gaye's one-room apartment outside Hollywood and then at Topanga Canyon.[24] During Gaye's 1974 concert tour, he performed the ballad, "Jan", to his new love. American soul singer-songwriter-producer who, to a large extent, ushered in the era of artist-controlled popular music of the 1970s, Marvin Gaye was born on April 2, 1939, at Freedman's Hospital in Washington, D.C., to church minister Marvin Gay Sr., and domestic worker Alberta Gay (née Cooper) Em 1977, a Motown lançou o single de "Got to Give It Up", que se tornou primeiro lugar nas lista Pop, R&B e Dance da Billboard, e o LP ao vivo Live at the London Palladium, álbum que vendeu em torno de duas milhões de cópias - se tornando um dos mais vendidos daquele ano.

The Gladys Knight & the Pips version released on September 28, 1967, was on Motown's Soul label, with "It’s Time to Go Now" on the B-side. Motown put little support behind it and the Pips relied on connections with DJs across the United States to get the record played. The Pips' version of "Grapevine" reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart on November 25, 1967, and stayed there for six weeks, making it the group's second R&B number one after 1961's "Every Beat of My Heart". It reached two on the Billboard Pop Singles chart[16] the same month, with the Monkees' "Daydream Believer" holding top spot. It was Motown's best-selling single to that point. We're The Miracles, o primeiro disco dos Miracles.

Gaye struck gold himself not much later, when "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" went to eight on Billboard's R&B charts. "Hitch Hike" gave him another R&B hit in 1962, but it was "Pride and Joy" that brought him into the pop charts, reaching ten in the summer of 1963. After "Can I Get a Witness" -- which went to three R&B, but 22 pop -- he placed four hits in the pop 20 during 1964 ("You're a Wonderful One," "Try It Baby," plus the Mary Wells duets "What's the Matter with You Baby" and "Once Upon a Time"), while also scoring a smash as songwriter via the Martha & the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street," which he co-wrote with Ivy Jo Hunter and William "Mickey" Stevenson. Lançado no segundo semestre de 1973, o álbum rendeu vários sucessos, entre os quais "You're a Special Part of Me", "My Mistake (Was to Love You)" e as versões para "You Are Everything" e "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)", ambas hits do grupo The Stylistics. Pubblicato nell'autunno 1973, l'album portò nella "Top 20" dei singoli i pezzi You're a Special Part of Me e My Mistake (Was to Love You). During the 1960s, it was often debated that Gaye dated his female singing companions such as Mary Wells and Kim Weston; Wells denied any romantic ties to Gaye and Weston later stated their relationship was strictly platonic.[30] The same was said of Gaye's relationship with his most successful duet partner Tammi Terrell. Gaye was deeply devastated following Terrell's collapse at a concert in Virginia where they were performing in 1967. Terrell's later diagnosis and death from a brain tumor would help to send Gaye to a depression. Gaye often blamed himself for Terrell's illness and death despite the fact that Terrell may have developed her tumor since her early childhood.[31] Gaye's devastation over Terrell's death fueled his cocaine addiction.[32] Marvin Gaye is the debut single recorded by American singer Charlie Puth featuring American singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor. Atlantic Records released it on February 10, 2015, as the lead single from Puth's debut album, Nine Track Mind (2016), and his third EP, Some Type of Love (2015). Puth co-wrote it with Julie Frost, Jacob Luttrell and Nick Seeley, and produced it alone

O trabalho com o produtor Norman Whitfield, que havia produzido "Grapevine", resultou em outros dois sucessos similares: "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby" e "That's the Way Love Is". Whitfield recorded the song with Marvin Gaye over five sessions, the first on February 3, 1967, and the last on April 10, 1967.[5][14] Recordings of this version took more than a month due to Whitfield overdubbing Gaye's vocals with that of the Andantes' background vocals, mixing in several tracks featuring the Funk Brothers on the rhythm track, and adding the string section from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra with an arrangement by Paul Riser.[5] Monumentally influential soul/R&B vocalist whose music incorporated socio-political issues, atmospheric arrangements, and unified album themes. Read Full Biography In 1956, a 17-year-old Marvin ran away from home to enlist in the United States Air Force.[9] Sent to bases in states such as Kansas, Texas and Wyoming, Marvin quickly grew tired of having to do menial tasks and began rebelling against the sergeant's strict orders.[10] Eventually, Gaye told officers he had a mental illness and was honorably discharged shortly afterwards in early 1957.[11] Before leaving the Air Force, Gaye lost his virginity to a prostitute.[11] Gaye explained the experience as "freaky" and started an obsession with what he liked to call, "love for sale".[11] Gaye noted he saw "a world of pure sex where people turned off their minds and fed their lusts, no questions asked. The concept sickened me, but I also found it exciting."[11] Upon his exit from the Air Force, his sergeant stated that Marvin refused to follow orders.[11][12] In addition to being recorded several times by Motown artists, the song has been recorded by musicians including Creedence Clearwater Revival who recorded an 11-minute version for their 1970 album, Cosmo's Factory,[26] that was released as a single, reaching 43 on Billboard's chart, with more modest success in other countries,[27] and funk musician Roger Troutman whose extended version (nearly 11 minutes itself) lifted off his 1981 solo album, The Many Facets of Roger,[28] brought the song back to number one on the R&B chart in early November of 1981, marking the third time the single reached the top spot on that chart. It also made the Billboard Hot 100, but was not a Pop success this time around, peaking at number 79.[29] British punk band The Slits recorded the song in a post-punk style as a bonus track on their 1979 album Cut.[30] Queen Latifah used the music as a basis for her 1998 single "Paper", produced by Pras Michel for her album Order in the Court.[31]

Altri due singoli, Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) e Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler), entrarono nella "Top 10" pop e furono numero uno della classifica R&B. In its unedited version as it appears on the album, the final minute of the song (and of the LP) is a reprise to the theme of "What's Going On", the album's first song, then segues into a dark ending. This final minute was cut off of the single version, as well as other sections of the song so the single edit runs under three minutes—this edit appears on subsequent reissues of the LP.
