Today Tyresö Palace is a museum. Marquis Claes Lagergren had purchased Tyresö Palace in 1892. Assisted by architect Isak Gustaf Clason, the Marquis rebuilt the castle, inspired by original drawings from the 17th century. The Marquis wanted the castle kept as a living document of Swedish history. He rebuilt large parts of the castle in a national romantic style. The marquis died in 1930, and in his will left Tyresö Palace to a museum foundation, the Nordic Museum (Nordiska museet). Today the Nordic Museum owns the castle, and it is open for guided tours during the summer. During his reign Aguntum experienced its greatest economic boom. To the right (east) on leaving the Atrium House are the city gates, which still stand 3-4.5 m high. The discovery of a layer of ash, as well as the remains of a man and a child in the bath house, points to the sack of Aguntum by the invading barbarians under Radagaisus and Alaric. The city's decline was marked when the bishopric was transferred to nearby Lavant, a few miles to the south. A second sack by Attila and his Huns is attested by a coin dated to AD 452 found in a higher layer of ash. When the Western Roman Empire collapsed, Aguntum passed under the control of the Ostrogoths and was fought over by Franks, Byzantines and Bavarians. Paul the Deacon write of a major battle fought in 610 between Garibald II of Bavaria and the Avars, in which Garibald was completely defeated. Aguntum was destroyed and even Lavant suffered a major fire. There were no further bishops ordained in the area and the surviving Roman population took refuge in hilltop fortresses while the barbarians settled in the fertile valley.Aguntum was the center of economy, traffic and administration of an area, which is now known as East Tyrol and also comprised the part in the west up to the Mühlbacher Klause in the valley of Pustertal. Due to the very good strategic position, Aguntum could grow in the calm and peaceful times of the 1st and 2nd century AD into a flowering trading and industrial city. Because of the resources of the Tauern range (low carbon steel, copper, argent and especially gold) and of exports of mountain crystal, wood, fossil resin, cattle and cheese it was an area of prosperity. One of the quality products, well known in the Roman Empire was the noric low carbon steel. Very famous for its durability. From the south luxury goods like wine, olive oil, cochlea and oysters were imported. First disturbances by invading GErmanic tribes in the 3rd century, causing remarkable damages, can be reported.

During these uncertain times, the Roman population took more and more refuge in the hill-top settlement in Lavant. After heavy devastations around 400 AD, Aguntum recovered but was destroyed shortly after another time of prosperity, during the major battle in 610 AD between the ancient Bavarians and Slavs. In course of the centuries high sand avalanches repeatedly covered the remains of the once important city.In 1999 the decision was made to rebuild the dimensions of the so called Atrium house but also to combine it with modern architectural shapes. Thus it happened that a suitable architect was needed for this project, because there were some restrictions for this building. Because of former floodings from a nearby stream new regulations were made to ensure the preservation of the findings and the ruins. Due to the complicated and maybe dangerous situation for the small archeological findings it was decided to finish the rebuilding of the Atrium like mentioned above but also to build a whole new museum. The oldest Roman remains are a two-roomed wooden structure discovered beneath the bath house and dated to the mid-first century BC. Aguntum was a mining and trading centre which exploited local sources of iron, copper, zinc and gold.
