Alfred Wright was first employed as a clerk in 1919. He subsequently became Administrative Secretary of the Union. According to Bob Weighill (RFU Secretary 1973-1986) Wright was the person who designed this new rose. There are no references to his re-designing or standardising the rose emblem in the RFU Minute books, or in any other documents held in the Museum of Rugby. This is unsurprising since at that time the RFU helped to administer the game of rugby throughout the world and the re-design of the rose would probably have been seen as immensely trivial. White Rose Rugby is committed to devising and implementing policies so that everyone in sport accepts their responsibilities to safeguard children from harm. The game of rugby has changed almost beyond recognition since its beginnings in the early part of the 19th century. But ever since the first international game between England and Scotland in 1871 one thing has remained constant throughout the years, and that is the red rose emblem on the England rugby shirt. The 'three lions passant guardant in pale' appeared in gold on a red background. Before this point, only two golden lions had adorned a red crest, following the Norman Conquest of 1066 (the House of Normandy). Then following the succession of King Henry II (the House of Plantagenet) in 1158, it became one golden lion. Differing stories will have you believe that Richard's lions were based on the original Normandy arms, with an extra lion added to represent the ongoing Anglo-Norman alliance. Another story will tell us that two leopards were combined with another from Aquitaine, a region in South-West France, on the acquisition of more territories to the crown. But the more cynical will tell you that it was simply down to an artist being only bothered to design three lions for England, just as they had designed only two for Normandy. The number of lions had no apparent significance, as this was Heraldic Coats of Arms in its infancy, based on decoration, above any other reason. Yet another version could be more simple, King Richard simply brought together the lions of Normandy and Plantagenet, and created the new Three Lions. A simple case of mathematics. Some things can be explained simply, instead of complicating matters.

In a photograph of the England rugby team taken at Twickenham on 25 January 1913 it can be seen that all players had different, stylised, versions of a red rose. In some, such as that worn by C H Pillman, the stalk of the flower is pointing in a different direction. Although some of the 1913 roses followed a broadly similar pattern, they are quite obviously not of an identical design. The fashion for swapping jerseys with an opponent following a game had not yet taken root and so many England players would have worn the same jersey for the duration of their careers.
